Actor of the Day

Corey Stoll knocked me out with his loud and likable performance as Ernest Hemingway in Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris. I was look warm movie but as an English teacher I loved the literary cameos. None more than Papa.

Alan Turing film

Not only is he the father of computer science, but Alan Turing is also a true British hero. He was instrumental in decoding German ciphers in World War II and helping us win. He is a bone fide legend, a gay icon and one of the most tragic figures in modern history.

Alan Turing was discovered to be a homosexual, was turned upon by the government he had served so well, was chemically castrated and banned from working on the projects which he had instigated. Driven to despair, he apparently took his own life by eating an apple laced with cyanide, in a final tribute to one of his favourite stories, Snow White.

Steve Jobs is reported to have named his company after that very incident, so it gives you some idea of Turing’s impact on the world of computing that the head of Apple cites him as an inspiration.

And now Benedict Cumberbatch is in talks to play Alan Turing in THE IMITATION GAME.

It's Khan!!!

Looks like Super Bowl answered it...

"Nothing ever changes, except man. Your technical accomplishments? Improve a mechanical device and you may double productivity. But improve man and you gain a thousand fold. I am such a man."

– Khan in "Space Seed"

Now doesn't that seem to be what Harrison alludes to in "the brig" scene...

I Am Canadian!

As an American dating a Canadian this commercial from Molsen makes me laugh every time ...

http://youtu.be/pXtVrDPhHBg

Hey, I'm not a lumberjack, or a fur trader.... I don't live in an igloo or eat blubber, or own a dogsled.... and I don't know Jimmy, Sally or Suzy from Canada, although I'm certain they're really really nice. I have a Prime Minister, not a president. I speak English and French, not American. And I pronounce it 'about', not 'a boot'. I can proudly sew my country's flag on my backpack. I believe in peace keeping, not policing, diversity, not assimilation, and that the beaver is a truly proud and noble animal. A toque is a hat, a chesterfield is a couch, and it is pronounced 'zed' not 'zee', 'zed' !!!! Canada is the second largest landmass! The first nation of hockey! and the best part of North America My name is Joe!! And I am Canadian!!!

Robert A. Heinlein on Violence

“Violence, naked force, has settled more issues in history than has any other factor.”

And

“War is not violence and killing, pure and simple; war is controlled violence, for a purpose. The purpose of war is to support your government’s decisions by force. The purpose is never to kill the enemy just to be killing him … but to make him do what you want him to do.”

30 Rock Wisdom

The Italians have a saying, Lemon. “Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.” And though they’ve never won a war, or mass produced a decent car, in this area, they are correct.
